Here’s an interesting look at the magic that goes into making movies look the way they do. The video above shows how scenes in one particular movie looked straight out of the camera compared to the finished version after color grading.
There are many parallels here with shooting and processing RAW photographs. The team behind the movie shot the film with a Black Magic camera in 2K RAW.
The untouched footage is flat, but capturing it in RAW allows you to work with the original image data recorded by the camera sensor. With 12 stops of dynamic range, you can do a great deal of color work and exposure correction without ruining the video. Here’s one of the before-and-after comparisons:
The colorist was Taylre Jones of the Kansas City-based Grade, and the movie is an independent feature film called “The House on Pine Street.”
