Olympus has announced that popular drone manufacturer DJI is the latest company to join the Micro Four Thirds System standard. The news suggests that there may be MFT-system camera drones somewhere on the horizon.
DJI is a Chinese company that’s based in Shenzhen, China. Founded in 2006, the company’s native name is Da-Jiang Innovations Science and Technology Co., Ltd. It joins two other Chinese companies (JCD and Flovel, two lesser-known optical equipment makers) in pledging support for the Micro Four Thirds standard.
The three companies “will be introducing products compliant with the Micro Four Thirds System standard,” Olympus says its its press release. “With the addition of exciting new products from these companies, the Micro Four Thirds lineup will become much more diverse, further increasing the potential of this advanced digital imaging system.”
In addition to putting its own cameras on drones, DJI has also made it easy for drone operators to mount GoPro cameras. With rumors swirling around of GoPro planning to enter the camera drone market, perhaps DJI is branching out into new camera options in order to keep its offerings separate from its potential future competitor.
