The pinhole camera is probably the earliest type of camera. In the beginning, a 'camera obscura' was a large darkened chamber with a small hole in one wall. The inverted image could be admired by visitors, or even traced to obtain a highly accurate representation of the scene outside. (First published May 14, 2011)
