Rangefinder online: Why Rapport Matters in Portrait Photography

To the untrained observer, great portrait photography may seem like a matter of proper technique and equipment. Most portrait shooters quickly discover that personality and developing a rapport with your subject play as big a role.

To truly appreciate this, listen to the photographer Platon recount how he took an iconic image of Russian president Vladimir Putin. Beyond merely having the gear, Paton did his research and had a plan to break the ice with the steely Russian autocrat. It’s worth watching even if your subjects aren’t as intimidating.
