For children who live in the slums of Nairobi, Kenya, making art may seem like an activity that’s out of reach. The non-profit organization Photo Start is working to change that, however, providing students in the slums of Kibera, Mathare and others with photography equipment and guidance from instructors.
The students of Photo Start not only learn visual and technical skills, but leadership traits as well. As their mission states on photostart.org, by teaching both the art and business side of photography, they “hope to bring about much-needed economic development, as well as to introduce the world to a new generation of artists.”
