Eric-René Penoy was elated when his clients Paul and James decided to elope to Scotland’s Isle of Skye. Other than the unbelievable landscapes, the photographer says he “just fell in love with the couple—their simplicity and artistic souls just touched me. I had in my mind some wild and epic shots, but we all know how the expectation and actual reality can be so far apart.” Indeed.
While these two were getting ready for their big day, the weather was bright and clear, “which for me does not fit my moody, drama-foggy style,” Penoy says with a laugh. The next thing they knew, as they were mid-ride to Elgol, a village in Skye, “it started to rain dogs and cats,” the photographer recalls. Upon arrival to the village, all the cruises were cancelled.
After an hour of driving around in search of a break in weather, with no success, they dipped down onto a small side road and found a private beach “full of machinery and equipment,” Penoy says, the rain still pouring. “The couple said, ‘We are going to be married here.’ It was terrible but epic at the same time.”
Penoy was shooting with two Canon 6D camera bodies, which were not water resistant but the photographer made his best efforts in shielding them. “The rain was falling horizontal due to the heavy wind,” he says—the entire front half of the officiant’s body was soaked, while her back was completely dry (and vice versa for the grooms). “I could not hear a word from them when they were exchanging vows, could not hear the celebrant at all, but it was their moment in this big world,” Penoy says. “Still today, I think this weather was a perfect condition for their elopement and don’t regret a single second of it.”
