Though probably easily mistakable for a styled shoot, this scene, of a bride and her bridesmaids minutes before the ceremony, was actually captured at a real wedding that Katja Scherle shot last August in Germany, where she’s based.
“I was scheduled to shoot the bridal party in the brightest midday sun without any real shade available,” Scherle says, “but I decided to make the best of it. After the more formal photos I always take several shots of the bridal party just walking and having fun. And after having shot them walking with their faces showing, I wanted to take a shot that highlighted the movement of their dresses, their bouquets and the ribbons attached to them. I was going for something playful, emotional and more Impressionist.”
The photographer wasn’t looking to get their faces sharp and in focus—without it, she says, “you can feel their excitement, their connection and the fun this group of women is having together. The bright midday sun actually ended up highlighting the wonderful color scheme the bride chose for her bridesmaids’ dresses.”
(Shot with a Contax 645, a Zeiss Planar 80mm lens and Kodak Portra 400 film. “Shooting film made me confident that all the little bright spots in the image wouldn’t burn out too much,” says Scherle, who used Carmencita Film Lab in Spain to develop and scan it.)
