To be perfectly frank, I was less impressed by the results of the third installment of "Character Portraits" by Joe McNally and Daniel Norton (I thought Episode 1's portaits were more striking). However, there was a very interesting tip covered in this video. In order to create a gradation on the background, Joe and Daniel place a V-flat over a studio light placed on the ground. After that, the background gradation was controlled by simply changing the angle of the V-flat and its relative distance to the background. [Sean]
