In “Transit,” Israeli Photographer Barak Zemer Captures Modern Day Purgatories

There is little or no movement in “Transit,” an exhibition of photographs by Israeli photographer Barak Zemer open through March 3 at Night Gallery in Los Angeles. Instead, the subjects in his photographs are trapped in different types of purgatories — in the seats of airplanes, in hospitals, in highway traffic.

“Passage is not without toll,” says a text that accompanies the exhibition.

Zemer takes the images with a handheld camera. Abstractly, they capture what it means to live in the modern world — always moving, from home to work, from life to death, but still, somehow, always waiting.

A selection of images from the exhibition is below. To learn more, visit Night Gallery’s website.
