First shown at Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, a symposium of more than 70 exhibitions that showcased Latin American art in Los Angeles, “Show and Tell” is a retrospective of works by Laura Aguilar, a large-bodied Chicana artist who is smashing traditional notions of beauty with her photography.
The exhibition, which features more than 100 photographs and videos, is currently on view at the Patricia & Philip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University through May 27, 2018.
Redolent of the work of Catherine Opie and Carolee Schneemann, Aguilar’s photographs capture her struggles with depression, obesity, self-acceptance, prejudice and misogyny. The female form emerges triumphant, setting a new standard for how women can be idealized in imagery. Along with self-portraits, the exhibition also features photographs produced in collaboration with the Los Angeles LGBT community.
