A Countercultural Icon Gets A Retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art

David Wojnarowicz first emerged in the New York art scene in the 1970s by painting stencils of burning houses on the sides of buildings in the East Village. Queer and later, HIV-positive, he quickly made a name for himself not only with his artwork, but also with his writing and political activism. Known for collaborating with a variety of photographers including Nan Goldin, and Peter Hujar (the latter was his mentor and lover), Wojnarowicz worked in a broad spectrum of mediums including photography, painting, music, sculpture, film and performance.

After his death from AIDS in 1996, Wojnarowicz’s ashes were spread on the lawn of the White House in Washington, D.C.

On July 13, a retrospective of Wojnarowicz’s career will open at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Consisting of more than 100 works, the exhibition, which closes on September 30, will travel to the Museo Reina Sofía in Spain in May 2019, and then to the Mudam Luxembourg – Musée d’Arte Moderne Grand-Duc Jean in Luxembourg in November 2019.
