Five Visual Journalists Awarded the 2018 Women Photograph x Nikon Grant

The winners of the Women Photograph + Nikon, and the Women Photograph + Getty Images grants.

Awarded annually to five visual journalists working in a documentary capacity, the Women Photograph x Nikon grant comes with $5,000. Culled from nearly 1,5000 applications, the winners of the 2018 awards are Tasneem Alsultan, Anna Boyiazis, Jess T. Dugan, Ana Maria Arevalo Gosen, and Etinosa Yvonne Osayimwen.

Alsultan won the grant for a project that explores Saudi Arabia’s Shiaa minory. Boyiazis won for Finding Freedom in the Water, a series that documents women and girls learning to swim for the first time in Zanzibar. Dugan, whose series To Survive On This Shore was recently featured on PDNedu, was awarded the grant for Every Breath We Drew, an ongoing series of portraits examined through the lens of queer identity. Arevalo Gosen won for a series that explores the effects of Venezuela’s malfunctioning justice system on women. And finally, Osayimwen won for It’s All in My Head is an ongoing project that explores the coping mechanisms of survivors of terrorism and violent conflict.

Nadia Shira Cohen was also announced as the winner of the 2018 Women Photograph + Getty Images grant, which comes with $10,000. Her winning project was Yo No Di a Luz, a look at the prohibition of abortion in El Salvador.
