New York-based Joshua Aronson, who was named one of PDN’s Emerging Photographers earlier this year, is always open to the possibility of photographing new subjects. Especially when the request to do so comes from the desk of Eva Lyons, a photo editor at The New York Times, who recently assigned Aronson to photograph the psychedelic rapper Bunny Michael for the Style section’s Up Next column.
The day of the shoot, which took place in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, Michael and Aronson immediately bonded over their youth. “I think [it’s] because we’re both young, we’re both caught up on the high of knowing we’re making a photograph that’s going to be in The New York Times,” Aronson told PDNedu. “[We tried to find] a moment of clarity in between the heightened awareness, pressure and anxiety of making a picture that’s permanent, and will live on in such a publication.”
The resulting images have a sense of peace about them, as if they were taken on a private estate rather than in a bustling public park. “It’s my job is to find that moment where we can take a deep breath and live amidst the madness,” Aronson said.
Originally from Miami Beach, Aronson specializes in taking intimate portraits of rising stars, and is currently working on his first self-published book, which features photographs made in New York about contemporary male identity.
