In a recent article for PDN, Holly Hughes asked three photo editors — Elizabeth Renstrom at Vice, Amanda Gorence at Refinery29 and Scott Hall at Travel & Leisure and Departures — for their insight on how to turn street photography into paid assignments.
All three editors stated that they hire street photographers, but in varying degrees. Renstrom noted that Vice’s advertisers want candid, spontaneous photography that feels authentic, making street-heavy portfolios especially attractive. Gorence said that Refinery29 hires street photographers to cover events “where we want to feel like we’re there.” And Hall says that while it’s rare that he lets a photographer just explore a place, he did recently hire street photographer Gus Powell to shoot a fashion editorial on the streets of New York.
To read learn more about each editor’s assigning process, and to learn specifically what they are looking for in a street photographer’s portfolio, read the original article on PDN’s website.
