It’s impossible to view “Meeting Sofie,” a series by Cologne-based photographer Snezhana von Buedingen, and not fall in love with her subject. Sofie is a 19-year-old girl with Down Syndrome who lives on her family’s farm in eastern Germany. Her father is an antiques dealer; the home where they live looks like a set from Vogue.
In the series, which von Buedingen began in October of 2017, Sofie is both a goddess and a human. Impossibly beautiful, but also subject to moments of elation and sadness, Sofie puts a new face on a disorder that is mostly just seen in one dimension — as a disability. Sofie, lying in a field of red poppies, is so much more — she is a teenager, she is a friend, she is a rebel, she is an icon, and she is a girl.
