Tyler Mitchell Unveiled as the Photographer Behind Beyoncé’s Vogue Cover Shoot

After weeks of speculation, 23-year-old Tyler Mitchell was unveiled as the photographer chosen by Beyoncé to shoot a cover story on her for the September 2018 issue Vogue. Mitchell is amongst the youngest photographers ever to ever shoot a cover for the publication — Irving Penn was 26 when his first image appeared on the cover in 1943.

The cover, which features two different images of Beyoncé on a dilapidated country estate just outside of London, is also the first by a black photographer in Vogue’s 126-year history.

In an interview with the magazine, Mitchell reveals: “When she sat down for me there was immediately the kind of comfort level you’d have with a friend, which was quite unexpected. You’d imagine someone as famous as Beyoncé to be protective of her image, but she was really an open book—and that’s exactly what you want as a photographer.”
