PetaPixel: SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD is a Tiny and Tough Drive for Outdoor Photogs

If you’re an outdoor photographer who needs a tiny and lightweight storage device that can withstand everything that you and your camera can, SanDisk’s new Extreme Portable SSD is one that’s designed for you.

On the outside, the Extreme Portable SSD is a pint-sized SSD that fits in the palm of your hand and one that slides easily into your camera bag without burdening you with noticeable extra weight. It measures just 0.348×1.951×3.787in (8.85×49.55×96.2 mm) and weighs 1.38oz (38.9g).

It’s also rugged and designed to withstand the elements: it has IP55 dust and water resistance (it can survive low-pressure water jets from any direction) and shock-resistance from drops of 6.6 feet (2m).

“SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD is ideal for throwing into your gear-bag or attaching to your camera bag with a carabiner,” SanDisk says.

The SSD may be small, but its capacity is big and its transfer speeds are fast: it’s available in 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB variants with read speeds of up to 550MB/s.

Connection-wise, the Extreme Portable SSD has a USB 3.1 Type-C connector as well as a Type-C to Type-A adapter, allowing it to be compatible with both new and old PCs and Macs.

The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD is available now and costs from $90 for the 250GB model up to $520 for the 2TB version.
