“Amy Winehouse” by Blake Wood Captures the True Soul of an Icon

Blake Wood, a photographer from Vermont whose work has been published in i-D Magazine and LOVE, first met Amy Winehouse in 2008. Not to be confused with her troubled husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, Wood quickly grew close to the star, traveling with her from London to Paris to St. Lucia. Their relationship was always platonic, but Wood had unfettered access to the star in her most intimate moments. At her insistence, he began to take photographs of her.

These photographs have been published in Amy Winehouse, a book consisting of 150 images by Wood and a text by Nancy Jo Sales, which was released by Taschen earlier this summer. The book shows the star not as she was depicted by the paparazzi — hunted and haunted— but instead, as she was with her friends. Happy, charismatic and hard-working.
