Six Documentary Photographers You Should Be Following Now

John-David Richardson, “Shelter” from Someday I’ll Find the Sun

In a recent article, Vice rounded up six contemporary photographers working in the documentary tradition. The main difference between them and 20th century predecessors such as Jacob Riis, Dorothea Lange, Henri Cartier-Bresson and August Sander? The six photographers reach audiences via Instagram.

The Vice list includes Devin Allen, who made a name photographing the Baltimore protests against the police killing of Freddie Gray; Anne Sophie Guillet, whose work addresses gender malleability; Matthew Shain, who photographs the spaces that remain where Confederate monuments once stood; Michal Chelbin, an Israeli photographer who photographs military students in the Ukraine, among other topics; and Abdo Shanan, who captures his native Algeria in grainy black and white.

Notable among them is John David Richardson, who captures working class America with a tender gaze. The image above is from his ongoing series “Someday I’ll Find the Sun.” To learn more about his work, visit his website.
