Gabriel Scarlett, a 22-year-old photojournalism student at Western Kentucky University, has won the 73rd College Photography of the Year Competition Still Photography Division, the organization (CPoY.org) announced earlier today. Scarlett was also awarded a Silver in General News, a Silver in Feature and an Award of Excellence in General News.
Josephine Norris of Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, was named the Runner-up College Photographer of the Year with a Silver award in the Portfolio category. Norris’ work was also honored with a Bronze in General News, an Award of Excellence in Feature, and two Awards of Excellence in Domestic Picture Story.
Scarlett and Norris were among 550 other students who entered the competition from 126 schools in 17 countries.
Judges for the Still division were: Marcia Allert, director of photography for The Dallas Morning News; Cheryl Diaz Meyer, Pulitzer Prize-winning independent photojournalist, formerly with The Dallas Morning News, The Star Tribune and The McClatchy Company; Patrick Farrell, Pulitzer Prize-winner, Miami Herald staff photographer; Vaughn Wallace, senior photography editor at National Geographic, formerly with Al Jazeera America and TIME.
