Senior Editor, Libby Peterson, of sister publication Rangefinder interviewed photographer Jack Davison and The New York Times‘ deputy photo director Jessica Dimson for a behind-the-scenes look at the photos commissioned for The New York Times Magazine’s Performers Issue.
Peterson’s article, published online and in the December 16 print edition of The New York Times takes a look into Davison’s process shooting celebrities Leonardo DiCaprio, Adam Driver, Lupita Nyong’o, Brad Pitt, Jennifer Lopez and Scarlett Johansson for the magazine’s covers and interior spreads.
Shot entirely with black-and-white film and using various materials to add an additional layer of intrigue, Davison’s images, according to Dimson, in Peterson’s article, include “an abundance of light … On each shoot, he pulled something from within the person, and they all feel like unique images in vastly different ways.”
