PetaPixel: Sock Puppet Teaches You How to Use Your Camera’s Manual Settings

If you’ve been looking for a fresh, entertaining take on the standard beginner’s guide to
getting out of Auto Mode, look no further. The YouTube channel TheCrafsMan SteadyCraftin has released the strangest (and yet still very informative) tutorial we’ve seen in this genre.

Think of this video as a complete beginner’s guide to the exposure triangle, taught by a sock puppet with a thick accent. As you’ve probably guessed, that last part makes it more entertaining than most videos in this genre, but we’re happy to report that it’s no less informative.

Shutter speed, aperture, and ISO are all explained, with all of the basic bases covered, including: motion blur, depth of field, digital noise, your camera’s built-in light meter, and more. There’s even a brief discussion of Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, White Balance, and when you might want to use a neutral density filter.

Check out the full tutorial up top to see for yourself, but fair warning: even if this is way too basic for your skill level, you might still find yourself watching the entire 25 minute video. It’s just plain… soothing.
