It’s probably that by now you’ve come across the statement, “light is key for photography,” many times already. That’s because it’s a very true statement. Without light, there would be no photography. So, how do you go about taking photos when the light is low? Well, this can be a real challenge. When shooting in low light conditions, you come across issues like camera shake and noise. In this video, photographer Kelechi Amadi-Obi shares 10 tips to take better photos during nighttime:
Obi shares some quite interesting tips that will really come in handy when taking photos during nighttime. Some are gear related while others need you to pay attention to your camera settings and the environment you’re shooting in.
When it comes to low-light photography, sometimes the gear actually does make a difference. For instance, a prime lens allows you to open up the aperture to a much wider setting thereby letting in a lot of light. So, if you find yourself working in low light conditions most of the time, investing in some prime lenses makes perfect sense. If you don’t have a prime lens, be sure to use the widest aperture setting possible. Also, using a sturdy tripod lets you use slower shutter speeds without introducing camera shake.
Next, spend some time understanding your camera and its limitations. Have an understanding of how high you can push your camera’s ISO without sacrificing image quality. This way, you will know your camera’s upper limit and that will give you some peace of mind when increasing your ISO and shooting on-location. The other setting you should look out for in your camera is image quality. Be sure to set it to raw. The greater information contained by raw images can rescue the image in a lot of scenarios including in low-light conditions.
Also look for any light sources around. If there are any light sources like street lamps or fluorescent lights, get close to them. This way, you can make the most of any light available. And if nothing works out, the ultimate solution can be to bring your own lights. You can either use LEDs or even portable strobes with a soft-box. These will definitely provide you with the best image quality possible.
There are a number of challenges associated with nighttime photography. But, once you learn to work around it, the results will come out amazing. As we are mostly used to seeing images taken during the day, nighttime photos stand out from the crowd. Make an effort and the results will definitely pay out.
